North of Toronto, Muskoka is the lake and cottage country of Ontario, with towns such as Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville (Muskoka Tourism); beyond it, Algonquin Provincial Park is a wilderness of lakes and forest.

The lakes

Muskoka’s towns, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville and the Muskoka Lakes, are the gateways to the lakes; Muskoka Tourism also runs guided stargazing.

Algonquin

Algonquin Provincial Park, run by Ontario Parks, is the wilderness beyond, of lakes, canoe routes and forest.

Come in late September or early October for the colour.

Our advice: check Ontario Parks’ fall colour reports before you set off.
