Updated November 2026

Visas and the eTA

To enter or transit through Canada, most people need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), not both. British citizens do not need a visa for short visits, normally up to six months, but may need an eTA; you do not need an eTA when arriving by land or sea, with acceptable travel documents and ID. Your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay (GOV.UK). Apply for the eTA only on the Government of Canada’s official page, where it costs CAN$7 (canada.ca).

UP Express, the TTC and PRESTO

UP Express runs from Pearson to Union Station in 28 minutes (UP Express). On the TTC the adult fare is $3.30 with PRESTO or a contactless credit or debit card, $3.35 in cash; a PRESTO day pass is $13.50, and monthly fare capping applies when you tap the same card (TTC).

The seasons

Summer is warm and busy with festivals; autumn brings colour to the ravines and to Muskoka; winter is cold, with snow and ice, when the PATH and the skating rinks come into their own. Clocks went back on Sunday 1 November 2026 and go forward again in March.

Public holidays

Public holidays in Ontario include Christmas Day (Friday 25 December 2026), Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December 2026), New Year’s Day (Friday 1 January 2027) and Family Day (Monday 15 February 2027); many shops and services close or change their hours.

Winter, health and emergencies

In an emergency call 911; for non-emergency City services call 311 (City of Toronto). Health811 connects you to a registered nurse, day or night, by dialling 811. In winter dress in layers with a hat and boots with grip, and check Environment Canada’s warnings. Travel with insurance that covers medical costs.
